The Marketing Consultant's Makeover
How I Got Increased Results: The Inside Story

By Marie Elwood, Brand Marketing Consultant

I Was Intensely Frustrated

I’d been wrestling with it ‘til my brains were blue. No matter how I twisted & turned the pieces, they wouldn’t come together. All my efforts to pull off a colorful kaleidoscope ended up looking like Picasso on a bad acid trip.

Time for a Radical Approach- - And a Dangerous Question

As a marketing consultant, I was locked in a perpetual struggle to try to communicate my own business in a clear, compelling manner. It wasn’t working. So I finally did what I needed to do… and I burned the house down.

Not literally, of course, but I lit the match on a kerosine-soaked question:

What would your business look like if you wiped the slate clean and started from scratch?

I Avoided It Kicking and Screaming

I hated that question. I’d started ‘Avalaunche’ 11 years ago and had invested a lot of psychological energy into my brand. How could I walk away from what I’d spent a decade trying to build?

Change comes when we can’t stand the status quo any more, when there’s too much “dissonance” between where we are and where we want to be. I’d finally reached that point.

How It All Began

I’d formed Avalaunche after leaving my job as a project director for a well-known marketing consultancy in New York City. I loved the ideation projects I’d done there. I knew how much energy & momentum successful new product launches could bring my clients, so I named my new firm ‘Avalaunche.’

Life was good, and I enjoyed working with top-notch clients like Hormel, General Mills, and M&M/Mars. But as exciting as it was to deliver juicy insights to big companies, the marketing consulting paradox left a bad taste in my mouth, and I wanted to get rid of it.

The Quest for Clarity

Have you ever noticed that most marketing firms have the same “differences”?  Everyone has their MBA. Everyone has worked for major corporations in their ‘past lives.’ Everyone has an impressive list of clients. Everyone has their own ‘proprietary’ approach. They all blur together, quite frankly- - and these are the ‘experts’ who are going to help you set your business apart?

That just wasn’t good enough. Not to me, anyway.

More Than Just 'Me'...

I knew my approach to finding business-building insights worked. I knew I had the unique ability to design great research, dive in deeply, and pull out practical insights that made sense in the bigger context. And not only that- - I’m fanatical about communicating ideas, insights & implications as clearly as possible so my clients will use them.

Knowing what I could do was good, but it wasn’t enough. I immerse myself into my clients’ worlds so I could serve them even better.

The Only Thing That Really Matters

I work with market research and marketing professionals at large companies. If there’s one thing these smart people have in common, it’s that they’re under a tremendous amount of pressure to deliver against their objectives. They need exact answers to their marketing questions so they can make the best business decisions possible. If they can do that, they’ll hit their numbers and move their businesses ahead. After everything is said and done, it’s all about results. Increased Results.

And that, I’m pleased to announce, is the name of my new firm.

Everything I do, from top to bottom, begins with the end in mind.  To significantly impact your bottom line, you need to get the best answers to your most challenging questions- - and that's what I do.

Come on over and check out how things are coming along. Let me know what you think. If you like what you see, let me help the next time you or someone you know is faced with a tough marketing challenge.

Is Your Message Everything You Want- - and Need- - It to Be?

Our challenge, especially in this economic climate, is to craft a clear, compelling message. Whenever we communicate with our target audience, we need to quickly & concisely communicate that we understand their needs and that we can help them solve their problems.

Sometimes our message just needs a little tweaking. Sometimes, we’ve got to brace ourselves for some heavy lifting and be willing to start from scratch to get it right.

Either way, I encourage you to embrace the challenge and press forward to an even stronger business proposition. In my case, it’s meant Increased Results.

Thanks for joining me today, and I’ll see you again on July 5th!
