About Twitter? I Was, Too...
"VIRAL NARCISSISM.”
That’s what Claire Suddath labelled social media in her ‘TIME’ article
“
Facebook: 25 Things I Didn’t Want to Know About
You.” I agree. I love LinkedIn, but MySpace & Facebook too
often seem like one big “look at ME!” circus.
I’d decided that Twitter would be even worse. The very idea of Twitter irked me: whose life
is so utterly riveting that the world needs play-by-play status updates, anyway?
But I Decided to Give Twitter a Try, and Here's
Why
Two things happened to change my mind. One of my favorite sales gurus,
Jeffrey Gitomer, echoed my reluctance in his
weekly e-newsletter before talking about how he’s done a 180-turn. Hmmm. Frank
Rambauskas’ pragmatic “
Never Cold Call Again Online Playbook” recommends Twitter as a marketing tool, too. Double hmmm.

How Do You Twitter?
|
Okay then, how do you twitter? Here's what I've found out about getting started on
Twitter. With Twitter you’ve only got 140 characters to say (“tweet”) something. You can read
140 characters quickly, so it’s not time-intensive to scan the tweets of the people you've decided
to "follow."

I started my Twitter journey by searching to see if my favorite authors were on
Twitter. Many were. I then looked at their tweets to see if they were saying anything of value or
just sending out inane status updates and promotional junk. I found about 20 worth following.
Something cool has happened. I’ve chatted one-on-one with a
few best-selling authors, separate from the tweets they broadcast to their thousands of followers, and
some are even following me on Twitter now too. I’ve discovered a few industry experts who consistently put
out value-added content; my favorite is
Marketing Guy.
So how does Twitter work? Surprisingly well, if you have similar objectives to mine.
Twitter has been surprisingly useful, with links to how-to articles, trends/studies, and thought-provoking
observations.
How Do You Twitter? It's Up to You. Here's My Approach...

When I tweet, my number-one intention is to be helpful (no
"Marie’s-sitting-in-carpool-slurpin'-on-a-fro-yo" reports), just as I try to do here in
Speed Dial. If I can add a little humor now and then, all the better.

This holiday weekend, if you haven’t tried Twitter, go ahead
and take a taste of it for three weeks (
How does twitter work? How do you Twitter? Learn here). I'd love to hear about your experiences, so
send me a tweet or two when you can.
Happy Thanksgiving, and I'll see you next week on
Speed Dial!
