"One of my hobbies since moving to Atlanta nearly four years ago
is gardening. I've always loved flowers, and it's very satisfying to be able to pull together an
arrangement to share with my friends or to bring inside the house.
The thing is, between work, family, and volunteer commitments, I don't have a lot of time to fuss with a bunch of
plants. And what I've discovered is that when it comes to gardening, not all flowers are created
equal.
Look at this arrangement, for example. Everything here is a breeze to grow. But these English roses, on
the other hand? They're a total nightmare. It's almost as if they're saying, "what what, we're in Atlanta
now? Why, that's a long way from London. Let's cover ourselves in black spot and powdery mildew
straight away!" See what I mean? Not even good British accents out of these flowers!
So here's my point today. In business, as well as in my personal life, I'm trying to ditch the divas and
choose the champions. There are tasks, activities, and (let's admit it) even people who
demand an inordinate amount of our time and attention- - time and attention that would probably be better spent
elsewhere. Oh sure, they might deliver some results, but the energy and effort expended just aren't worth the
return on investment.
Maybe there are some divas you'll want to ditch and champions you could choose this week as well. Thanks for
joining me, and I'll see you next Tuesday."
