The Angelina Jolie Case Study
Think in Threes for Personal and Career Development

By Marie Elwood, Brand Marketing Consultant

In years past he had been a Michigan football player, WWII Colonel, & entrepreneur who wrestled mahogany from the jungles of Mindanao, but he was just "Granddad" to me. One day, after a particularly good python story, he began teaching us how to fight ("not because you should start, but because you'd better know how to finish") using his signature move. It was two quick, hard jabs backed by a jaw-dropping CLOSER: 'boom-boom-POW!'

To deliver a knockout win in your career, try thinking in threes as well. Whether it's a promotional campaign, publicity play, or an attempt to score big points with the powers that be, batch your approach into three rapid-fire game-changing initiatives for maximum personal and career development.

Here's why: your first hit will hardly register, since you're blocked by background noise.

The second initiative, if it follows closely, is more impactful & piques curiosity.

Then it's time for the third & final punch, the blockbuster 'POW' that can leave behind your desired impression and help give you a jaw-dropping career development win.

I've used some 'boom-boom-POW' myself over the years, but to see this approach to personal and career development in action, let's consider the transformation of actress Angelina Jolie. Whether you like her or not, Jolie has a dramatically different image now than she did 10 years ago:

  ANGELINA BEFORE  (Pre-2001)

  ANGELINA AFTER  (Post-2001)

Angelina Before? Arguably six shades of crazy- - she cuts herself, uses a vial of Billy Bob's blood as a nifty necklace, & tongue-kisses her freakadelic bro at the Oscars. Angelina After? A humanitarian super-Mom who has 'date-nights' with some guy named Brad.

It's exceedingly rare for a person (or brand) to pull off such a radical shift when it comes to personal and career development- - and remarkably, according to Wikipedia, Jolie has neither a publicist nor an agent. She began with refugee work for the UN, which went largely unnoticed (celebrity causes are a dime a dozen). Then she adopted Maddox from Cambodia, creating a rift with Billy Bob (but more headlines). Finally, Jolie delivered a knee-buckling 'POW!'- - Brad Pitt.

Jolie has given her career knockout momentum because her new image is unwaveringly consistent: she didn't just become a Mom to Maddox; she now has five other children. She didn't just take a day-trip for the UN, she's met with Congress two dozen times & donated millions to relief efforts. Underscoring these changes, when Jolie steps out with Mr. All-America, she now does so in a decidedly more elegant manner.

When you need to make a major impact, think in threes & pull a series of impressive initiatives together for your own 'boom-boom-POW' personal and career development.
